View Full Version : XO's Saturday Nights
Well... I'm here at XO's right now and I'm terribly blasted..... I swear all the ladies love me ... but I think its just the alchahol. I"ll write about the night when I've sobered up. But I just wanted to let EVERYONE know that they need to get their Butt's up here and check this place out. RJ threw down a mind-blowing set tonight. The venue is cool as hell and the lights are primo primo. The music is tastier than an emeryl dinner and I've never run into such nice clubbers. Check out my review soon. I'll get it up as soon as I can type more than 3 words per hour without mistakes.. ... Get your azzes out here!!!!!!!!!!

Good girl/guy ratio at XO when I was there but drinks seem $$$
yeah... a redbull and vodka is 8 dollars... plus tip that\'s like 9-10 for one drink...depending on if the bartender is a guy/girl ugly/cute.
Ok everyone, I put up a review of XO\'s in the reviews section. It\'s my first review of anything so I hope I covered everything well and gave decent descriptions. Cheers!

People actually pay that! I wouldnt pay that much for a drink if I was a millionaire.
Well dammit they were hot bartenders!
Actually...now that I think about it... I guess I did run out of money. Yeah well... I\'m going to bring a pocket rocket next time.
Well I just found out that I screwed up the review. Can\'t put certain things in it... I\'ll get it up there when I can. *grumbles*

XO.. this was the only club i used to go every time i go to westport.. the music is aweful.. the dj spins tracks that are 2-3 years old. sometimes i feel like going to the dj booth and kick the dj out so i can take over, and really show the crowd a good set.
a couple of times last year, the dj put on a really good set, all new tracks, i couldn\'t believe my ears.. but really i haven\'t enjoyed any night at XO this year. it used to be much better before..
i know what good clubbing tunes are.. and when the dj plays nelly (it\'s getting hot in here) and eminem at XO, this is not why i paid $6 to get in. it is supposed to be a techno club, but still the crowd loves it.
also some of the people inside are snobby, just be yourself and have fun..
the restrooms are nasty, i mean come on, we\'re paying a cover charge, clean the place up a bit. also at times, there are so many guys, the night just loses it\'s flavor.. they should keep the club balanced.
i guarantee everytime you go there you\'ll hear the following (cheese/commercial) tracks: rapture, castles in the sky, sandstorm, 9pm til i come, alice deejay, kylie minogue:
for XO female dee jay on satardays: stop playing those tracks, please.. buy NEW vinyls from ( milk inc, sylver, zippora, kate ryan, jessy, la luna, Flesh & Bones.. the list goes on ....................... ) and show me a good time.
XO should have guest deejay\'s and different styles. i would pay 20$ if the dee jay is good. hard trance, hard house, nrg, techno.. make a variety.. bring people to the club who enjoy techno music and NOT people who wanna dance to eminem and alice deejay.
i think it\'s time to check out different clubs, cause unless the club hire a dj that know what good club tunes are, i ain\'t going.
anyhows, this is my review.. and my 2 cents

ummm why you asking bout me? Clubber obviously doesnt know s hit about how things are really done around here.
Besides, I work here. I wouldnt bash the place like that.
Ohhh and Clubber, how bout Dave Ralph and Terry Mullen for only $8 at XO. Where were you for that? Jackass.
Man, they play a mix down there at XO\'s that caters to a very different crowd than what frequents board. Sure they may toss in a few hip-hop beats every now and then, but its what pays the bills. When you are paying money to put on a club night or a party, the you can decide what music gets played. Don\'t come if you don\'t like. But people go to what they want to hear. And right now, that\'s the music that you\'re hearing at XO\'s Fri/Sat nights. If you\'re in need of a beat feed, come and hear RJ play, and be schooled.

geez people. looks like everybody is attacking me here.. i am not a jackass.. that was my review people. when you read a review, you expect 2 things: either a good one or a bad one. that was what i wrote and i am sticking to it. no offense to anybody ..
i have no idea who RJ is. but i would like to go hear him/her play, and then i will caste my vote to whether i like his/her style or not. when i wrote about the female dj, don\'t get me wrong, i am all for female dj\'s especially in a field dominated by male dj\'s. and there is nothing sexier than a girl spinning techno or trance in my opinion.
maybe i wasn\'t there for Dave Ralph and Terry Mullen (now i wish i was there).. and i have no idea who they are.. obviously im not familiar with this scene. i do not live in KC so it\'s hard for me to know what\'s going on, but i go down there very frequently. and i\'ve got friends who go to XO and tell me about how the night went.
anyhows, i am not in a need of a beat feed.. but i would like to hear your RJ spin, let me know when and where, and i\'ll try to make it. i\'m going to chaos theory this friday night, and i\'m free on satarday night, if there is something going on, let me know, i\'ll be there.
Bhumble, yeah man, rapture is cool, maybe that was a bad example, but i meant that it was way too overplayed.. it\'s like now that new tomcraft song, loneliness.. it\'s awesome but my god, everybody is spinning it i can\'t hear it no more.. do you see what i am saying.
IMA, if the club takes your advice that \"that\'s what XO is playing on fri/sat night\", the club is going nowhere !
all in all, i am happy i found this site.. it\'s cool to see people who like techno in kansas city.
so cheers, clubber.

XO has a policy when it comes to music being played. Make the people dance. As we all know KC has a wide varity of people in it and when it comes to the larger super clubs their is really only one choice in KC. XO Club. With XO being the one and only super club it needs to be able to cater to everybody that enters its doors, from the super cheesy to the straight underground. Im not gonna say anything about Fridays cuz thats all Hip-hop and top 40, but on Saturdays you can hear it all, from down and dirty breaks, to house, trance, top 40 remixes, and hip-hop. We cater to everybody.
Last Saturday night after I got done playing, Tabitha played Nelly, then NSync, then went into some hardhouse, then trance, the next thing I know she is playing Kemek the dope computers new single, then some other choice cuts from Bedrock, Hybrid and others. Everybody got to hear something that they enjoyed.
Just remember, whenever you enter a party or a club, its not all about you. Its about everybody. And if you dont like it, go somewhere else.
Randy J.

Good point with that last line. People get pissed when they hear one track they think is shitty then they get bent all out of shape. They assume that everyone thinks its shitty. People dont realize that everyone has a distinct taste in music.
*bows to RJ and Felixx* Amen to all that. Well dammit... I\"LL be there again. hehe. I\'m part of that awful public that loves anything with a beat. But I know what\'s sexy. XO\'s and UV baby.

I have to agree on that. Being a girl there is nothing worse than a gross bathroom. If I am at a club I would expect it to be clean. Someone should routinely check them to make sure everything is clean. I undersand sometimes there are a lot of people but if you own a club I would think you would have mastered keeping the toilets clean with a crowd!
As for the music. Like they said it pleases a variety. Honestly if you go to XO enough to notice what tracks they play over and over maybe its time to find a new club. All clubs will sound a bit repeatitive after awhile, thats nothing specific to XO. ;)

Im sorry but I had to add in one more thing. Clubber, I write reviews of peoples music and club nights and such for some very important and very looked at places, and never would i write a bad review about anything for the public to see. I can be very harsh and over critical since i have been in this business for so many years now. However, if I do write a bad review, i do personally send that review to the person that it concerns the most so that they may know my opinions.
Whats the point of writting a bad review and publishing it? All you will do is scare off all the people and by the time the person or place you are writting a review about has a chance to fix it his business is gone.
How old are you Clubber? You seem pretty young to me. I would ask that you learn more about what you are saying and who you are saying it to in the future before you feed us with your negative reviews. Thanks

Wow, here we go again on the XO rant. RJ, I must say you are once again coming across as a real ass. First off, you are a hypocrite about saying you do not trash people in reviews. In fact it is on Syde-sho you were saying how lame you think AC\'s Garage on Thursday\'s is. I\'m sure you are being completely impartial since YOU have never played there (yeah right). And RJ since you are such a spectacular review writer, you might want to check out spell check, you need to work on your grammer and spelling baby!!. Now.......back to XO. For being a \"superclub\" as you put it RJ (I\'m crying because of hysterical laughter at the moment) it\'s failing miserably. What\'s so super about it?? Oh, wait I know....NOTHING!! I really don\'t think the music changes yearly except for maybe 1-2 tracks a month (what a SUPERCLUB), and even then the selection is mediocre. Granted you people do play some good tracks and do get some good guests to come play, but other venues blow you out of the water on this one too. The crowd sucks, this isn\'t the clubs fault inparticluar, gotta make money, but it doesn\'t make people want to go there unless they are looking for some easy pussy or lame frat jokes. The bathrooms at XO are filthy, especially for being a SUPERCLUB. Last time I was at XO (a couple months ago) all the ladies toilets smelled like urine and there was a girl pissing in the sink in front of XO\'s bathroom attendant (so classy in a superclub). Eww!!!
RJ, just because you work at your self-proclaimed superclub doesn\'t mean you should not listen to other point\'s of view and criticism. Who knows, maybe one day you will learn that your ideas are not always right and if you take input from others, you might end up being a little more successful in life.

Well this is a reply to both the wonder twins who I wasnt even talking to in the first place.
Lets start with my bad review of Ac\'s. I beleive what I said was I didnt like the venue, which I have expressed to Adam personally and he agreed. But I do beleive I said the dj\'s were top notch. And about the being impartial cuz I havnt played there, well I dont want to play there, I wouldnt comprimise my music to play on that system clashing with the punk rock in the front room for nothing. Don\'t pretend you know me, cuz you dont, I write reviews, good ones, about many things I have never had anything to do with.
About my grammer and spelling, I never claimed to have the best and all of the reviews I write to places that dont even concern Syde-Sho have professionals that correct all that for me. If I wanted to be a professional writter I would go to school for it. Its not my fault that people like what I have to say, maybe you two wonder twins dont, but I could care less what either of you liked.
So now lets talk about XO being the only super club in KC. Tell me, what other venue in KC can you go to that holds 1500 people or more and is a dance club all week long? Well i\'ll tell you, none. Not one other then XO. You of all people cant talk about the music changes here because YOU NEVER COME HERE. Do we play alot of older songs? Yes we do. Do we play alot of newer songs? Yes we do. As I stated in a previous post in this thread, we play everything that people want to hear. This would most likely explain the reason why we are still averaging 600 people on a Friday night and still over 1000 every Saturday night. Now tell me, what other venue in KC has as many guest dj\'s coming to play of such a high nority as XO? Lets see, since November we have had Dave Aude (who is coming back), KC-Christmas, Dave Ralph, Terry Mullen, and now John Aquaviva is coming. Do I need to refer you to the UMOVE website to see who all else is going to be here?
Now for everybody on this board who attends XO, I think you really insulted them by saying the crowd sucks. Some of KC\'s best house dj\'s play in the Oxygen room all week long with decent crowds, many of those same people attend alot of other events in the city, so you are saying they suck? And even the main crowd out in the main room, why do they suck? Cuz they like different styles of music then you? Cuz the women wear more skimpy outfits then you? Cuz they are a bit more free with themselves and don\'t care about music as to sit back and say \"eww I dont like that\" but rather just wanna go out and have a good time and dance care free?
You two (Danielle and Laura) are so stuck up and so snotty about your opinions that you only speak half truths when dissing people. You tell me to get over myself, well I think you both should take your own advice.
Laura I think I have seen you in XO once in maybe a year, and the whole time you were in the Oxygen room. How would you know what is played all night in the main room? Just cuz you heard one song being played on your way to the dirty bathrooms doesnt make you an expert on the entire 5 hours of music that was played all night. And Danielle you claim to be an expert on the club now, but I think Clubber may be more in tune with this place then you, since I have never seen you in here.
Now lets discuss the \"taking input from other people\" thing. I find it hard to take the advice of somebody who really doesnt know what they are talking about. Usually, with the electronic elitest, when they come in the main room and hear a top 40 remix, hip-hop song, or an older club anthem, they turn around and walk away without hearing the music that will be coming up next and they stay away for awhile not knowing what else was played. Where as I am up in the booth all night and hear every single song played. I know what is played so when I hear you people bitch and moan about the dj playing the same old tired shit night after night, that pisses me off, cuz it just shows me that most of you that say those things have the attention span of a 1st grader. So no Im not gonna take that sort of inaccurate input. And about being more succesful, I think im doing fine. I have a job that I love, Im surrounded by music, and my djing is carying me to places that I would never have dreamed of going a year ago. So again, dont pretend that you know anything about me, cuz you dont. Get over it.
Of course I am going to defend the place where I work. I have been here for two and a half years now, most of my friends work here, come here, and get drunk here. But to have two little girls that have been in here once or twice come on and bash the place is ridiculas. Why dont you set aside your diffrences with me and actually come down here on a Sat night sometime and really listen. You might learn something.

anyhows, this is my review.. and my 2 cents
Let me start by introducing myself. I am DJ Tabitha, XO Club, the person blasted by the guy in this message. I do not frequently check or respond to message boards like this, but I think it is time to set the record straight on a few things.
To “Clubber”, whoever you are and wherever you live. I am sorry you no longer enjoy the music at XO Club, and you certainly are entitled to your opinion, but there are obviously quite a few things about the DJ and nightclub business you do not understand. Since other people out there might have similar thoughts about parts of your note, let me explain.
First of all, there is some truth to what you wrote: I do play some songs that are 2 and 3 years old (what DJ doesn’t?). I do play some of the songs he listed on Saturday’s (in the early part of the night); our restrooms do need some attention; and last but certainly not least, I do play some R&B/Hip-Hop (against my personal taste). But that is where the accuracy and intelligence of your response ends.
For the entire 4-plus years I have been at XO Club in the main room on Saturday nights, and 5-6 years before my arrival, this club has been the number one (straight) nightclub in this city. It has consistently kept the largest room in town full week after week, and has for the majority of this time (until recently…we are due for a remodel) been the Mecca of what nightclubbing before 3:00 AM in this town was all about. This club, under Stewart’s direction, became the standard other clubs emulated. This is not an accident. Of the many elements necessary to achieve and maintain this success, music is one of the primary ones. The main room pays the bills for that club. The music heard in that room and adjoining small ones (not Oxygen) typically reaches the ears of over 1000 people each weekend night.
While small rooms have the luxury of playing “cutting-edge” and genre-specific types of music, large rooms such as this one do not. Many different types of people pass through that room on any given Saturday night, and it is my job to make as many of them happy as possible, by playing music that they enjoy, even if it is for only part of the night. The measure of that success is three-fold: door count, liquor sales, and of course the one directly under my control - dance floor response.
If small rooms have a bad night or a ineffective DJ, it’s not a big deal; if a large room does it can lead to a very rapid death. Small rooms can successfully feature a certain genre of music like breaks, house, trance, or whatever and fill that room with people who support it. I think that’s great; I’m in complete favor of it. It’s just not that simple with large rooms. We get everyone from girls out with their bridal party, club kids, college kids, work parties, and about everyone who likes to dance to some kind of music in the 21 – 35 age group. But the club is never full of any one type of them – always a mixture. Therefore, the music must be a mixture too.
Saturday’s continue to maintain a 98% techno/house/trance/breaks –whatever you want to call it format, and I struggle almost weekly with the owner to push for this, and while it’s working, even this format must be familiar to people, thus the part of older, more familiar songs you hear.
Think about it, people dance, sing, and create party memories together best with the songs that they know. Largely obscure sets of music of a specific genre don’t appeal to a large number or type of people, strictly by definition, but rather alienate people and create emotionally cold rooms. And, while it is true that songs get overplayed and get “old,” to many of us music lovers who thrive on new releases and sounds, the majority of people find comfort in familiar hits. And, as long as that remains true, and I continue to get requests and response from familiar songs, the will remain in my rotation, because what you, Mr. Anonymous Clubber, fail to understand, is that any good DJ set is not a music lesson for the listeners, but a service to them. One of my mentors once told me to remember to always create a party. Familiarity does this. It pulls people in together rather than pushing them to the corners of the room. And, in general, the larger the room, the more diverse you must be in order to help touch on the wider range of personalities in the room.
Please understand, while I am proud of what I have done there over the years, and I do personally enjoy a lot of the music I play, make no mistake, it has not ever been a four hour set of my personal taste in music. In the 11-plus years I’ve been playing in major nightclub weekend slots, I have yet to find the job that is all about me and what I want. It continues to be first and foremost about the people directly below where I am playing – the dancers. And, as long as they continue to scream when I play songs like Castles In The Sky, I will continue to play them.

XO Club
While I totally agree with Tabitha on this one, it\'s still a sad state of affairs that we live in a city as big as Kansas City and XO is the standard to be judged by. In almost any other city the size of ours (and of course bigger cities) there are nightclubs that are solely dedicated to bringing a better educated (musically) crowd a wonderful mixture of what most Kansans would consider \'underground\' music. These clubs bring in \'headliners\' that play all genres of house, trance, breaks, jungle, dnb, techno, etc. and pack rooms/venues 4 times bigger than XO. And not like once a month... weekly, and sometimes 2-3 times a week! But b/c of where you live, you have to deal with what\'s offered...
XO as a nightclub... I like the venue... I\'d do ALOT of things differently... I don\'t \'connect\' with the majority of the clientele... and I just never have much fun there...
Tabitha as a DJ... she\'s great... technically and style wise... as far as track selection... I believe if she was left to play ONLY what she WANTED to play, it would be a very different scene there... in a good way... don\'t trust me though... she\'s playing at Ultraviolet in Lawrence this month with RJ...
Gotta run...
Cheers,
~ justin lake whedon
Tabitha I must say that\'s the most intelligent response to any criticism to anything on here I\'ve ever seen. Three cheers to you. Looking forward to having you at UV....

First of all, my first lanhuage is not english, so you may find grammetical error in this message.sorry.
I have lived in Los angeles, California for 3 yesrs, then I am living here since Jan 2003. When I lived in L.A, I went to many DJ Sets, such as Sasha, John Digweed, DeepDish, and so far.....
I tried to find clubs which play like progreesive house music. My friend recommended at Xo, and I went 2 times.
This is my personal opinion:
I expect Dj play progressive house music, Actually, Dj did it, but I couldn\'t enjoy it. beacuse I agree with Clubber\'s opinion.
DJ who play at XO seems to read this foram, so I want to tell her. Please play new vinyl, because you plaied exactly same songs, when I went to XO 2 times. If her explain is correct, KC is developed city for Techno/House music, and I am so sad,and regret living in KC.
For XO sound Enginner, Buy New speakers and change settings. It is not good enough. XO charge only $6 is not excuse,I used to go one club charge only $2 in L.A, but makes really good sound.
Finally, I want to ask who read this foram that is XO the best club in KC which play this kind of music?
Water is FREE, AMAZING.
Thank you for reading my broken english.
P.S.
You can listen Top DJ\'s new sets every week. so you will enjoy it.

Digee. Did you check out the lounge in the back? They\'re ALWAYS playing awesome house, tech-house, and tribal stuff. You gotta remember that the main room is designed for the brainwashed top-40 crowd, not for discerning club-goers like yourself. The Top-40 crowd is, unfortunately, what pays the bills in this area. I\'m personally learning that fact the hard way right now.
You must remember that LA is going to be much more receptive to non-mainstream styles of music than KC, or many places here in the midwest. It sucks that America is twenty years behind the Eastern Hemisphere when it comes to the variance of club styles. This is a fact that must be accepted by those of us who live over here and know the difference.
The DJ\'s at XO CAN\'T play different records. Tabitha and RJ do an excellent job technically, and I know for a fact that both of them are under constant pressure from the owners and managers to play what the crowd wants to hear. It\'s not Them you want to talk to about playing different music. The WANT to play different music. If you\'re serious about it, then tell the owner your opinions and your thoughts... get your friends to do the same!
If you want to hear the XO DJ\'s play \"different vinyl,\" come to Ultraviolet to hear them this month!
When it comes to the bigger picture Digee... I agree with you and wish there were more clubs around (any club around) that had the cojones and the cash to play some tasty tech. But its not what pays the bills here... :(

Dude, Luke, the fundraiser was so bad@ss :o !!! Synnister, suisse, nastynate, oh yes, the lounge is the coolest. I noticed that they were having a few technical difficulties w/the needles. Like I asked Nate at Jasons party last night, I\'m wondering if you know anything about when they\'re gonna put a DJ out on the deck outside, and a mini bar would be cool. I guess funds are an issue in this sort of thing. If you need help w/anything drop me a line.
The patio will be open April 24th weather permitting.

Thank you for replying me,IMA.
Yes, I checked out the sub room at XO, his set was great for me, and I dance about an hour, but I suddenlly rearized that only few people dance in the sub room. Rest of people were sitting the couch, and talking, listening, and watching me, so I felt like in animal park. I am not animal in zoo.
I left the room and backed to Main room. Crowd of main room was much better than sub room, but music in main room wasn\'t pull my mind rather than sub room. so, I wasn\'t undecided which room was best for me.
So, if some Dj\'s play like sub room in main room, that is I want to be there. So, let me know in that time.
P.S:
When I went to Sasha\'s web site, Sasha and John Digweed played at UpTown Theater for U.S tour last september 2002, so I hope that they come back, and KC will grow up Techno/House music.
Thank you for replying me,IMA.
