Police blocked off several downtown streets Friday morning after construction crews unearthed an old vault door with three suspicious cylinders on it.
Officers have blocked off 16th Street and Grand, near where the Sprint Arena is being built.
"We have a perimeter from about 12th Street to 16th Street from Main to Locust," Capt. Rich Lockhart said.
Crews excavated the door at about 9:30 a.m. Lockhart said that three cylinders about 6 inches long attached to it.
A city official told KMBC that the old safe had a vault protection system. When crews pulled the casing off the door of the safe, there was a blue flame and a small amount of gas was emitted.
Hazardous materials crews were at the scene. KMBC's Martin Augustine reported that four construction workers were being decontaminated as a precaution.
City officials believe the safe is from 1975 or earlier. They said that after 1975, gas and flames were not allowed to protect vaults.
