O'Connor Retires From Supreme Court
AP - Fri Jul 1, 6:59 PM ET
WASHINGTON - Sandra Day O'Connor stepped down unexpectedly from the Supreme Court on Friday, closing out a career as the first woman justice and the anchor of a shaky majority for abortion rights. President Bush pledged to name a successor quickly as the costliest confirmation battle in history took shape. O'Connor's decision to retire created the first vacancy at the high court in 11 years, and marked the departure of the justice who had become the majority maker in a stream of 5-4 cases covering abortion, affirmative action, the death penalty and more over a quarter-century.
bush will name a sucessor after july 8th.

no, the worst thing that could happen and that's already in the works, is rehnquist readying to retire...he's been talkin about it for awhile....2 judges retire in the middle of this presidency? this is a HUGE problem...the only reason we have "activist judges" (and i sooooo fucking hate that terminology) is because people appoint judges who are either left or right thinking...the appointers forget that a judge is SUPPOSED to be impartial and make rulings based on Constitutionality, not party or personal bias...the next three years are going to be heavy handed with large sweeping changes across the country, and not for the better (according to more of us liberal-esque types)
i plan on moving to europe in a couple years... for like 10 years or so, then coming back here when/if things have improved
^^ i have to agree with you on that one..
How are things going to change if people get out of the country intead of trying to stay here and make a change.
^ hahahahaha. by the way, bush isn't the only reason i'm attracted to europe.
i just really don't like 50% of americans right now. no amount of activism will make those people more intelligent.

^^^ I agree! I could shout and scream from the top of every major building and in every major mall about what Bush is doing to our economy and the US and people will continue to walk right on by and not give 2 thoughts about what I am saying... Right now our country is conservative and will remain that way for quite a few more years. Especially with how everything is going with the Supreme Court right now. This statement may sound uneducated... but in short... We need to get all the old fo'gies out of there. When our generation starts to move into those positions I *think* the levels of conservatives/right wing republicans will decrease. You will always have you typical political groups... Republicans (unfortunantley) will never die!

Im tired of all of syde-sho complaining about Bush. Instead why dont we all stop bitching about how you think the Republicans are so bad, and then vote the libertarians into power...THEN WE ALL WIN!!!

so uhh...
Looks like our problems may be doubling.....
Rehnquist might be handing in his resignation papers as we speak
it would really suck if that gonzalas fag gets appointed

i couldn't agree more. i've been saying for awhile that there is a conservative backlash forming in the last couple years that has popped up more than just in politics. tv and radio are censoring far more (and more specifically) than they have in the past and are molding shows and songs into what the mainstream middle america whines is appropriate. i'm not sure if it's for marketability (or making money, cause they realize we, in the midwest, are truly "fat in the middle") or it's because we're scared of what we're becoming (with movies and people having to go to farther extremes to be noticed - ie raping kids, shooting kids at school, political/world conspiracies, etc). I just wish our generation would speak a little louder in their actions so that we don't end up in a social hole we will have a great deal of trouble digging our way out of...
^ conservative activist groups who have ties w/ republican politicians are lobbying for changes in broadcasting/marketing. it's not the public's voice...
maybe not our public's voice but the lobbying is most likely a response to their conservative activist congregations, their public.
