Wood on Mars?

Can anyone identify what this is on Mars? This was taken from NASA's website. I think it's a space railroad tie. I also can't figure out what is in the background (behind the "wood"). It can't be from a previous mission, unless this is the remnant from man's early intellectual deficiencies:

Well, it doesn't look like it could roll over your neighbor's dog.... Who know's. Looks like a piece of wood to me. That bright thing could probably be a corruption of the data transfer to nasa, or possibly a speck of dust? Though usually dust has a little glow around it when a camera picks it up...

Who knows. Pretty cool though.
