RALEIGH, N.C. - Inspired by the documentary "Super Size Me," Merab Morgan decided to give a fast-food-only diet a try. The construction worker and mother of two ate only at McDonald's for 90 days — and dropped 37 pounds in the process.

It was a vastly different outcome than what happened in the documentary to filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, who put on 30 pounds and saw his health deteriorate after 5,000 calories a day of nothing but McDonald's food.

Morgan, from Raleigh, thought the documentary had unfairly targeted the world's largest restaurant company, implying that the obese were victims of a careless corporate giant. People are responsible for what they eat, she said, not restaurants. The problem with a McDonald's-only diet isn't what's on the menu, but the choices made from it, she said.

"I thought it's two birds with one stone — to lose weight and to prove a point for the little fat people," Morgan said. "Just because they accidentally put an apple pie in my bag instead of my apple dippers doesn't mean I'm going to say, 'Oh, I can eat the apple pie.'"

Spurlock, who turned his surprise-hit movie into a TV show on the FX network, isn't talking about Morgan or the many other McDieters who have criticized his film and found success losing weight by eating healthy foods off the McDonald's menu, said his publicist, David Magdael.

One person went so far as to make her own independent film about dieting at McDonald's. "Me and Mickey D" follows Soso Whaley, of Kensington, N.H., as she spends three 30-day periods on the diet. She dropped from 175 to 139 pounds, eating 2,000 calories-a-day at McDonald's.

"I had to think about what I was eating," Whaley said. "I couldn't just walk in there and say 'I'll take a cinnamon bun and a Diet Coke.' ... I know a lot of people are really turned off by the whole thought of monitoring what they are eating, but that's part of the problem."

As might be expected, McDonald's also objected to the impressions left by Spurlock's film. Walt Riker, the company's vice president of corporate communications, said Oak Brook, Ill.-based company is pleased — but not surprised — that some customers have lost weight eating only at the fast-food giant.

Spurlock's film "really spurred a backlash based on common sense," Riker said.

Morgan used nutritional information downloaded from McDonald's Web site to create meal plans of no more than 1,400 calories a day. She only ate french fries twice, usually choosing burgers and salads. Those choices are a stark contrast with those made by Spurlock, who ate every menu item at least once.

At the end of the 90 days, she had dropped from 227 to 190 pounds.

"It feels great," she said. "Because, the truth of the matter is that beauty is power, and if you're fat, or your overweight, then people don't really take you seriously."

Dawn Jackson Blatner, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, agreed that a low-calorie, McDonald's-only diet can help people lose weight but said it may not offer enough long-term variety. Whatever an individual does to lose weight, they need to do for the rest of their life, she said.

Morgan said she hasn't decided if she will stick with the McDonald's-only plan to reach her goal of 150 pounds. But she does have one complaint about McDonald's.

"If I could suggest anything to McDonald's, I would suggest the McMargarita," Morgan said. "Dine-in only, of course."

No, if you are ignorant you are not taken seriously.....

"Morgan used nutritional information downloaded from McDonald's Web site to create meal plans of no more than 1,400 calories a day."
any diet that limits calories to 1,400 is going to cause weight loss.....DUH!!! especially if you are already over weight......

the problem with this "study" is that a majority of americans do not calculate the amount of calories that they consume......most are ignorant to what they put in their bodies....i.e. Big Mac with a diet coke...... you could produce these results with any restaurant, fast food joint, or grocery items....it is all about the calculations

*steps down from soap box*

furthermore, this is not the point that Morgan was trying to make....the point is that americans are uninformed/ignorant...most do not enter McDonalds with the intent of locating the healthiest choices on the menu...they go for convenience....no cooking no cleaning no meal planning and happy kids stuffed with oil in the shape of fries or mcnuggets......

saturated fat & sugar = bad

she could have eaten like 2,500 calories/day and lost the same amount of weight if she'd eliminated those and split 3 meals into 5.

+ exercise of course.

i just posted it in response to the other mcdees argument. i think both diets are rediculous. if you go from a vegan lifestyle to eating 5000 calories a day in meat, sure youll gain a bit of weight and screw up your body. same with this. if you go from eating 3 double cheeseburgers and a large fry to a salad and a diet coke, i imagine you would lose weight. both were to such extremes, there is no base test. and thats why each is ludicrous in their own right.

Morgan's show "30 days" is one of my favorites on television... i highly recommend it... not twisting the truth, just displaying it after experiencing it...

Hey Mike, Spurlock wasnt a vegan before starting his 30 day binge. His girlfriend was the vegan.

Spurlock has since resumed his normal diet of meats and such.

Now what bugs me aobut these new people is that, just like how Spurloks experimant wasnt exactly practical, neither are these new guys. How many people honestly look at the nutritional value of McDonalds food before hitting the drive thru?

Why would you go to McDonalds for just a salad?

These people conducting the loose weight experimants at Mc D's are just as flawed as the original experimant. Although Spurlocks experimant wasnt exactly proctical for the everyday common person, he did bring out alot of truths to the matter. Their are people who eat at Mc Donalds and other fast food joints every single day. I know this because only two years ago I was one of those people. When I was single, and didnt like to cook, I ate out nearly every singe day.

I never once stopped to look at the nutritional value or fat content of the food I was eating, i just ate it. Just like millions of other people. If you remember from the film, Spurlock did try to find the nutritional information sheets at several McDonalds he visited. In most they wernt even there. McD's does have the info online, but still only 25% of America is plugged into the net. How the fuck is some 23 year old kids from the poor side of town supposed to watch his diet when eating at Mc D's or other fast food joints every day?

And for these people to just look up the nutritional content of MC D's food and base a diet of MC D's products based on that info is just dumb. Who the fuck on this site has ever seen the nutritional content of Mc D's food? I have, but only after I watched Super Size Me. Now of those of oyu who have seen the info, how many of you have looked at that enourmous chart and then planned your meal at Mc D's around the nutritional content of that info?

Ya thought so.

Common sense is the biggest factor when dealing with fast food. It doesnt take alot of common sense to realise that eating big macs and double quarter pounders every freaken day is gonna fucking kill you.

The problem with that whole mentality is that 50% of Americans have no common sense. At least 50% of Americans are as stupid as a rock. And its these people that Mc D's prays upon. Their a giant coperation out there to make money, thats what they do. They dont give three flying fuckes about who eats their food and dies from it. So long as they can sell burgers and milkshakes to the fucking idiots who walk through their doors every day.

I still eat fast food. Hell I eat at Wendys at least once a month, and at Hayes twice a month. Its bad for me and I know it. Hell on a nutritional level Wendys is actually worse then MC D's. I make that choice based off of the info I know about the food that im eating. I know the food is bad for me, hence the reason I dont eat it every day like i once did. I have cut back my fast food intake by over 90%. All the same, I dont consult a nutritional value sheet for Wendys every time I pop through the drive through.

i know the that both were skewed. thats why i posted this one. it doesnt really apply to me, i eat once, sometimes twice a day. when i do eat its rarely mcdonalds anymore (except last night) i usually just cook some chicken or grab a sub sandwich. i just thought it would be nice to have another viewpoint of the argument. i tire of the whole mcdonalds is trying to kill us all argument. and dont get me started on the whole customer retention level of corporate america, i could go days with just quotes from sprint employees alone.
