Starting to see a lot of articles like this one over the last couple days. Seems the media made a boo-boo. Good to know that the whole world viewed us as total assclowns in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, thanks to the reports of rapes and all that bullshit.

LA Times Article (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-rumors27sep27,0,5492806,full.story?coll=la-home-headlines)

"The wild rumors filled the vacuum and seemed to gain credence with each retelling — that an infant's body had been found in a trash can, that sharks from Lake Pontchartrain were swimming through the business district, that hundreds of bodies had been stacked in the Superdome basement."

the shark thing would have been sweet!

I read that article too. Katrina was like a media feeding frenzy -and they LOVED it. The good thing to come from it, however, is that it shook some reporters oout of their GW-induced state of apathy...

hmmmm. how convienant it is now to deny the whole thing. now that the anger is starting to fade from peoples memorys, lets deny the whole thing ever happened.

ya sure some of the storied could have been over inflated rumors but c'mon. i was there in 92 when Andrew destroyed southern florida and some pretty nasty stuff happened after dard following the storm.

I have no doubt that many of the rumors stemed from some form of truth, and i dont doubt for a minute that many people had died in the superdome. hell we saw the bodies on TV, it doesnt get much more real then that.

I don't think anyone is denying anything. I think some people were pissed they got slammed for things and were made to look like fools because of what we heard from the media about this situation. Those people in turn did some research on what exactly did take place. Now that information is coming out. Unfortunately there probably won't be much coverage on this from the major cable news networks. So far the LA Times and a New Orleans paper have been the only ones to post anything about this.

I mean how ridiculous is it to hear that there's raping and murdering going on all over the place to then find out there were in fact NO rapes and the murder rate during the aftermath was on average for New Orleans. That's pretty fucking pathetic on the part of the news agencies. I also think it really exposes just how ignorant the local government in New Orleans is. They were the main sources of all this catastrophic news. Making public statements calling it a war zone and deaths happening everywhere and helping spread panic when they are the ones who should be trying to calm everyone and take charge. In the end as we start to learn more FACTS about the situation in the aftermath of the hurricane I think it will become more and more apparent that the local government in New Orleans is more responsible then anyone else.

25% of the NO police force are going to have disciplinary actions brought against them because they left post without notifying anyone. Remember the video of the 2 cops shopping for shoes in that Wal-Mart? Why weren't they doing their job? You mean to tell me the local police were not involved somewhere in the emergency plan's of the city? Yea it was a hurricane...but have we ever heard some shit like this before? 25% of a city's police force getting out of Dodge during a crisis? What about all the cops in NYC that DIED at the WTC on 9/11? Did they run?

I could go on and on about how all this crap falls more on the state/local government more then the federal but the internet doesn't have enough room for it all. People are becoming more and more reliant on the Feds and it's despicable.

but our reliance on the feds is our own doing.

we allowed the goverment to form FEMA, and The Department of Homeland Security, whose sole goal is to protect our nation and to provide assistance when needed. If neither of these agencys exsisted, then I suppose it wouldnt matter.

However, every nations goverment is expected to take care of its people in time of crises. We are supposed to be one of the richest nations in the world. Why is it then that one of the richest nations in the world is incapable of helping its poor when they are dyeing?

Maybe we shouldnt rely on our goverment so much, but only because they will do nothing but fail us in the end.
