ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) -- A 93-year-old driver apparently suffering from dementia fatally struck a pedestrian and drove for three miles with the man's body through his windshield, police said.

Ralph Parker was stopped after he drove through a tollbooth on the Sunshine Skyway, Traffic Homicide Investigator Michael Jockers said. The toll taker called police, he said.

Parker was not likely to face charges because he did not appear to know what happened or where he was, said Bruce Bartlett, chief assistant in the Pinellas-Pasco County State Attorney's Office.

"He may have somewhere in his mind have realized it was a crash, but immediately forgot about it," Jockers said.

The victim's leg was severed in the Wednesday night crash, police said. The man, whose name was not released, was 52.

Parker had renewed his license in 2003.

"That was the one thing he had, to get in his car and just drive for the sheer enjoyment of driving," Jockers said. Parker lived alone after his wife died in 1998, authorities said.

Yeah. It really is sad that often times people continue to drive in order to keep thier independence when they really should not be on the road. Most of the time friends and family don't bother to do anything about it until they are in a car accident. It really is sad for both the driver and the man he killed.

yea people that old shouldn't be driving. my grandpa had a stroke once and pretty much lost use of his right arm, but he would still occassionaly drive 4 hours to kc (at like 92) from table rock lake in his stick shift truck shifting with his left hand the whole time.

I think over the age of 70 you should have to take the actual driver's test every year. Old people account for tons of deaths and accidents a year. I also think that between 16-18 you should have to test again or take a driver's saftey class in order to keep your ability to operate a motor vehicle. It's scary when you think about how many accidents occur within that age range!
