RENO, Nevada (AP) -- The mayor of Las Vegas has suggested that people who deface freeways with graffiti should have their thumbs cut off on television.

"In the old days in France, they had beheadings of people who commit heinous crimes," Mayor Oscar Goodman said Wednesday on the TV show "Nevada Newsmakers."

Goodman said the city has a beautiful highway landscaping project and "these punks come along and deface it."

"I'm saying maybe you put them on TV and cut off a thumb," the mayor said. "That may be the right thing to do."

Goodman also suggested whippings should be brought back for children who get into trouble.

Another panelist on the show, state university system regent Howard Rosenberg, said cutting off the thumbs of taggers won't solve the problem and Goodman should "use his head for something other than a hat rack."

I think that punishment should be harder for lots of crimes...bring the Death Penalty back into society...and put cameras on street corners in the violent/crime ridden neighborhoods

I think crimes should be punished by one of two means....fines or inprisonment....

No death penalty, no removal of limbs, nothing violent. You kill someone...go sit in jail. Why should we combat violent crimes with violent punishment?

I do agree that if you cut off the hands of people that steal, then theft will be greatly reduced, but I don't think if you invoke the death penalty that it will reduce murders. And, I don't think cutting off shit is an answer to anything.

You know what the problem with our country is? We don't cut off enough thumbs. How stupid does that sound? Graffiti is ill, and for all the wack taggers, keep throwin up your bullshit - better than nothing I say - if I want landscapes I'll move to the country - in the city keep rocking the spray paint!

The death penalty doesnt work, in its current configuration, because of all the appeals, and weak minded people that undermine its efficiency.

If it were an absolute that because you killed someone, raped someone, or something equally as bad, that you were going straight to the chair after being convicted.

Then it would, in my opinion, actually mean something. Most criminals, arent afraid of going to jail cause you get decent food, cable tv, workout machines and weights, etc. Jail should be the ABSOLUTE WORST THING THAT ANYONE WOULD EVER HAVE TO GO THROUGH!!! Not a babysitting camp like jails are like today.

Death penalty blows nuts. First of all, people have been proven innocent post fry, injection, etc., and that happening even one time is way fucked up. Killing the innocent shows us how barbaric and savage our society still is. Secondly, the death penalty bottom line doesn't deter the crime any more than jail time. They can make it swifter with less red tape, but it won't stop the fact that the criminal thought he or she was going to get away with the crime. Who cares what the penalty is if you doin't get caught? Anti-Death penalty propoganda is based on facts and truths, while pro-death penalty propoganda is based on killing and saving tax money. I used to be a pro death penalty meat eating fool myself, but when the light hits, not even a pair of sunglasses can stop it. Crime is a vicious circle and it is all about the dollar bills. Cops need crime to maintain jobs. The DEA needs illegal highs, so they can perform their jobs. The FDA won't approve herbal medicine, because they can't patent it. The death penalty is wrong. Killing is wrong. The death penalty is not a big picture solution. Love and understanding are big picture solutions. I'm done with this. I'm going to go eat a veggie-burger. Peace.
