ID Wins in Kansas (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/11/08/tech/main1026220.shtml)
I'm speachless. Granted they are not flat out saying schools must teach ID in science class, but they are leaving it open. It's not a science. They say the universe is so complex it must have been created by a higher power. Who is this higher power? God? Flying Spaghetti Monster? Evolution may not hold all the answers yet, but that's just how it works. There will always be things we learn from scientific study. We will never know all the answers. That's the way it has always been and always will be. ID is the same thing as creationism with some window dressing to make it not look like creationism. But you know what they say, if it looks like shit and smells like shit....well then it must be shit.
Teach ID all you want, just don't teach it in the science classes of our public schools.

People can put their faith in something they can't see and believe that that entity can create miracles, but its so hard to think that that God might have created the single celled organism that eventually evolved into monkeys then man. I think it's a good compromise with scientific reliability. The only thing in the way of this theory is Adam and EVE. Adam and Eve are like aesops fables; a story in the past to teach right and wrong. Doesn't seem feesable to me. (not to offend-just an opinion)-the bible has been translated, retranslated, and edited for content and propaganda for over 1000 years. don't you think the story then very well could have been placed at a later date? when u think about how screwed up a conversation between 3 or 4 people can get screwed up....doesn't it make it feesable.

I think it is okay. Maybe if we invole science with religion and stop thinking of religion into science. things might get proven or even proven wrong. There is always logic even in miracles our intelligence as a human race just isn't there yet. we are gaining an understanding of ourselves still and we still have a ways to go. when we don't understand things we have a tendancy to make a whole fantasy realm around something to justify it's being. let science prod at religion-it can't hurt. HOWEVER, there is a difference in giving info and data...and preaching-it's not a thin line either.

I lived in Overland Park from about 6th grade until I was 21. Did another stint in OP a few years back. Let's just say that if it wasn't for work or friends, I would have nothing to do with that side of state line. Over the years Kansas has become increasingly Republican and horribly religous. All you have to do is drive down a suburban Kansas street and you see that there are massive new mega-churches on every corner. There is a whole lot of money backing those churches, and that usually leads to some sort of church/state intermingling. I am just happy that I received a good education back when things were normal there. I feel bad for anyone growing up in Kansas who isn't a psycho Christian or (dear God no) might be gay in that state. Its no surprise to me that ID had a win because if the Republican majority of Kansas had their way, there would be no separation of church and state. They probably won't be happy until witch hunts are brought back and the state is driven back to the times of the horse and buggy. Only problem would be that they would be wondering if driving their new Mercedes is a prideful sin or still the status symbol every Kansan strives for.
I have no problem with people practicing their own religion, but keep it out of my face, out of my school, and out of my government. FYI, I was raised Catholic and still consider myself one, just no need to be pushy about it.

I find it ridiculous that board is so worry about teaching the origins of the universe -- which can never be proven scientifically anyway -- yet there is no discussion of teaching things students NEED to learn in the 21st century. (That is, things that were taught in the beginning of the 20th century before the liberals changed public education forever) Students need to be learning physics and chemistry. they also need to be learning advanced math to go along with it. Some kids get through high school without learning any of these - not even basic algebra! Our whole education system is TWISTED! Kids can't read, analyze, or think critically anymore. It's called the dumbing down of America.
i find it highly offensive that someone would suggest i'm complaining just to complain (sydeburnz)

yup... everyone needs to send their kids to china.
^ yea, i certainly wouldn't want my kids going a school which teaches a bunch of religious-influenced garbage. not only is it ridiculous to 'teach' an idea so ambiguous as 'intelligent design', the petty in-class arguements over which is more plausible will just make the learning process as a whole more inefficient. there is nothing to learn about creationism outside of church. if parents want their kids to learn about that, save it for sunday.

perhaps if conservatives started taking an interest in TEACHING instead of money laundering and white collar crimes, you wouldn't have a 97% Liberal education system. but what do i know...i'm only a college student interested in teaching young people how to think for themselves, not formulate thoughts based on a religious ideology.

I may not have any school aged children right now, but we do have one on the way, so Im thinking about these things a little more seriously now. We've already decided we definately do not want our children to go to school in the midwest. I was raised here, and Mike was raised in New York. We've decided that we want our children taught in an area where religion is kept out of school, which is definately not here.
I remember in my history class Sophmore year, the teacher taught a section on evolution, then began to teach about creation and we had a test over some bible stories. I remember the whole time I was stunned that not only was this being presented to us, but we were being tested over it.
I was raised Catholic so I knew all about what he was discussing, but I think if you are going to teach creation along with evolution you should be teaching more than just what Christians/Jews believe.

they're actually trying to teach complete abstinence...if you can believe that...
They have sex ed in Park Hill and North Kansas City School Districts in Missouri, I cant speak for school districts in Kansas though.
In NKC we were taught about "safe sex" and Park hill does the abstinence thing. Didnt work very well. In the class above me, like 25 girls dropped out to have babies, and like at least 20 in my class.
^lol... we were taught sex ed in 6th grade
In NKC they split health into two classes, one where you learn about how to eat right and exercise and what not, and one where you learn about sex. They talked about birth control and STDs and whatnot. It was freshman year I believe.

I say let science prove religion wrong and when that happens laugh at the people who raised their kids on false hope. Over 70 stories have officially been disproven by science, archaeology, anthropology and technology. Go ahead teach it in schools maybe our kids will get it right and figure out the truth. We have the same attitude now as ancient times don't mix religion and school. uh-your government came up with this plan-follow it like they want. I just get a feeling that we will learn somethings about it if we do what no one wanted us to do for hundreds of years teach em together but as info and theory not absolut. There is nothing wrong with stating that "christians believe, taoists believe, buddhists believe," there will be a problem if it is..."this is the way everyone has to think."
I don't think they taught us sex ed til the 10th or 11th grade in NY.
And... werent most people you know having sex by then?
I just think educators should keep their personal beliefs, rather it be about religion, sex, or politics, out of the classroom.

I don't give a damn if gay's get married. And no I do not have kids, but money coming out of my paycheck is going to pay for schools in my area. There is supposed to be a seperation of church and state, which is why they are calling this Intelligent Desing instead of creationism. Creationism was already shot down (in most public schools) because of the seperation of church and state. So they are just changing a few words and hoping people are too stupid to see what's going on, and it seems to be working.

I don't see what the big deal is, it's not like evolution is OUT and intelligent design is in...
Christians have the same right to be represented as we do, in thier theories of science as well as we have them in ours. Until evolution is something that is proven(and I see great evidence of it, so don't think I'm with them) then it shouldn't REALLY even be taught, nor should intelligent design...
and at the point that it's PROVEN, don't you think it'd be more of a HISTORY kinda thing?
It's stupid to examine all sides of everything with only your point of view in mind--espe cially if your point of view is still a theory as well. I for one, don't think that teaching an alternate theory and comparing it to Evolution as possible is really going to do less good than bad. I think examining every possibility, no matter how remote is the only thing that science should be about--not someone's fucking agenda.
You aren't assured the RIGHT to never hear about religion in schools, you are assured the RIGHT that noone will ever prevent you from hearing about it in schools. Go back and read the fucking constitution. The state hasn't CHOSEN A RELIGION, they have CHOSEN to present an alternative theory on the day they are teaching evolution. I for one, would like to make an informed decision on evolution. Wouldn't you?

You can't find a legitimate resident of DC who is a republican. I defy you, find me ONE!

Did you not follow the elections last night? Even Fox News is showing a landslide shift of power last night on the state levels, a sure sign of things to come in the next election. Even in Virginia, a state Bush was in the day before the election to campaign for the republican Governers spot with him, the Democrats won by 10%
Ok, maybe I could hit a FEW republicans... it was a rather facetious comment to begin with, Mike... choose your battles, buddy. I wish someone would hit the republicans with a nuke... I'm certain we all agree.
