ROYALS NAME DAYTON MOORE GENERAL MANAGER

KANSAS CITY, MO (May 31, 2006) – The Kansas City Royals have named Dayton Moore Senior Vice President-Baseball Operations/General Manager, Royals President Dan Glass announced today. Moore replaces Allard Baird who was relieved of his duties this morning. Baird has served in the same position since June 17, 2000 and been a fixture in the organization for the past 18 seasons.
Moore, 39, will assume his new duties on Thursday, June 8, following the Major League Amateur Draft. Assistant General Manager Muzzy Jackson will serve as the interim general manager until Moore’s arrival. Moore will be formally introduced and made available to the media in a press conference on June 8 at 1 p.m. at Kauffman Stadium.
“We are fortunate to attract one of the brightest young minds in baseball,” Glass said. “Dayton comes from a winning tradition and brings tremendous experience in all aspects of baseball operations.
Baird began his career with the Royals as the hitting coach at Class A Appleton in 1988. Following a two-year stint in the Midwest League, he served as the Territorial Scouting Supervisor in Florida from 1990-92. He was promoted to National Cross Checker in 1993 and held that position until he was named Special Assistant to the General Manager in February of 1997. He was named the fifth general manager of the Royals in 2000 and was named A.L. Executive of the Year by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in 2003.
“We are grateful for Allard’s long and loyal service to the Kansas City Royals,” Glass said. “He has always acted with integrity and the organization’s best interest at heart. We will miss Allard and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
Moore, a native of Wichita and former resident of Garden City, Kan., brings an impressive resume to the Royals. He most recently served as Assistant General Manager/Baseball Operations for the Atlanta Braves since August, 2005.
“I’m excited about the opportunity the Kansas City Royals have given me,” Moore said. “The city has great fans, a great baseball tradition and an ownership commitment to excellence. My family and I are looking forward to joining the team and becoming a part of the Kansas City community.”
In 2005 Moore was named by Baseball America as one of the Top 10 Up-and-Coming Power Brokers in Major League Baseball after being named the top general manager prospect by the same publication in 2004.
Prior to his tenure as assistant general manager, Moore served three years as Director of Player Personnel. He was responsible for overseeing all aspects of scouting and player development. He originally joined the staff as an area scouting supervisor for the Mid Atlantic states and was promoted to the front office in August, 1996 as an assistant in the Baseball Operations Department. Moore was named Assistant Director of Scouting in November of 1996. In 1999, he worked as the Assistant Director of Scouting and Assistant Director of Player Development and was promoted to Director of International Scouting during the 2000 baseball season and earned a promotion as Director of Player Personnel in 2002.
Prior to joining the Braves organization, Moore served as an assistant baseball coach at George Mason University from 1990 to 1994. While working on a graduate degree, Moore managed the Winchester Royals of the Shenandoah Valley League from 1991 to 1993.
He has played a key role in the Braves string of 14 straight division titles having worked for the organization since 1994. Under the leadership of Braves General Manager and former Royals GM John Schuerholz, the Atlanta Braves earned the prestigious Organization of the Year Award from Baseball America several times, including last season. The franchise earned the award in 2005 after seeing 18 rookies contribute for the team, including 12 that made their Major League debut.
The Braves have won at least 100 games in 5 of the past 9 seasons and have not won fewer than 88 games in a non-strike shortened season since 1990.
Moore graduated from George Mason University in 1989 with a degree in Physical Education and Health. Three years later he earned his master’s degree in Athletic Administration from GMU. He and his wife, Marianne, have two daughters, Ashley, 10, and Avery, 7, and a son, Robert, 4.

I am just glad that his contract includes complete control over the players and not having to be trumped by the Glass family...

this won't pay off until next year at the earliest...
