Lebanon's coastline could take up to 10 years to recover from a massive oil spill, the nation's environment minister has said.

Yacoub Sarraf said it was impossible to tackle the problem while the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel continued.

Marine experts have warned the spill could pose a cancer risk to people living in the affected areas.

The oil slick caused by Israeli bombing of a power station now covers 120km (75 miles) of the region's coasts.

Mr Sarraf said the delay had already severely affected the Lebanese shores.

"The damage has been done. It goes without saying that the whole fishing community will be hit for at least two or three years before the ecosystem re-establishes itself," he told BBC News.

"The tourism sector has also been hit for one or two seasons, and I am being very optimistic.

"But worse, if we do not intervene as soon as possible, the spill that is still floating off the coast of Lebanon could return and hit the shores again."

Mr Sarraf added that until there was a ceasefire, it would be impossible to begin any clean-up operation.

"We cannot get equipment, companies, labour or know-how to handle the problem," he said.

"If you compare this to any spill in history, intervention can help within the first 48-72 hours of the spill; we are already 20 days too late."

'Cancer risk'

Marine experts from Inforac, an organisation with links to the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep), issued a warning on Tuesday that the raid on the Jiyyeh Power plant in mid-July could pose a cancer risk to people living in the area.

I'm trying to search for it on google but due to recent activities any search terms of the sort are worthless. Oh...and it's kinda tough to find anything about it in the mainstream news because you don't hear them report this little fact. But yes....that's right kiddies...there was already supposed to be a buffer zone on the southern border and look how that worked out. Instead of a buffer zone there are hundreds...hell...probably thousands of rockets stashed all along the border.

But we should always try deplomacy first.......riiiggghhhttt.

Note to Lebenon: Just a thought. Maybe you should avoid attacking Israel in the future. And release the hostages you've taken. Might help in the whole cease-fire thing you're trying to convince the rest of the world you want.

Note: to ignorant dope above: Hezbollah, a separatist group.. separate from Lebanon (think of those crazy guys in Montana that have their own compounds that basically kill anything within range... and they decide to shoot rockets at Canada, and then Canada decides to shoot up USA just because some jackass' in Montana started shooting.. More like if the crazy guys in Montana were completely tied in with the government. Basically a part of the government in power. Funded by that government. So much so that the crazy guys in Montana were highly trained and so great in number that we couldn't really call them a crazy fringe group anymore but a paramilitary extension of the army. And this rather sizable group attacked the sovergn nation to the north (in this case, Canada) and killed their citizens and took prisoners. Now don't you suppose that if a group in Montana, or the Mafia, or whatever other group you'd like to compare them to; attacked another nation, the World would rush to condemn the US? These are State sponsored terrorists. And Lebenon is more than able to deal with them. Just as the US would be more than able to deal with a millitant group that's gone nuts. They choose not to.

wrong again. Hez. is not funded by the Leb. gov. They are a self sufficent group funded completely by themselves and outside forces. The reason Leb. has not removed Hez.? Hez. is has a stronger fighting force than the army of Leb. Isreal attacking innocents, the UN, and countless aid workers is truely state sponsered terrorism.
