Funkhouser recall under way
Kansas City city clerk Millie Crossland confirms a woman named Saundra Ross today filed an affidavit to begin the process of recalling Mayor Mark Funkhouser.
Crossland said the affidavit, which lists a committee of petitioners, contains six reasons for Funkhouser's recall. Among them: nepotism and breach of public trust.
She said the committee will have 30 days after the paperwork is finalized to gather 16,950 valid signatures to force the recall.
Before Funkhouser began a press conference about the recall effort this afternoon, the woman behind it explained her reasons.
Saundra Ross said she was a former student of Funkhouser’s at Park University. She said she is a former city employee and currently works for the state department of health and senior services.
“Mark was wrong to campaign on a platform to bring fiscal responsibility to Kansas City when he can’t keep his own house in order,” she said. “He said ‘Bring it on’ (about a recall effort) and we’re going to bring it to him. That is something you don’t do: You don’t taunt people who spend money and pay taxes.”

a.k.a., "we don't like how you've been running the city, so we're gonna play some bullshit game in order to make people think you rigged the election"
silly twat.

Fuck Funkhouser. Dude is not living up to what he ran on and is costing the city money and its reputation.
I would sign it just based on how crazy his wife is and how much influence she has over him.

I wonder how many cities re-do their whole downtown just to wind up losing two conventions with the next mayor. Lurch needs to go.
where do I sign the petition

well... while i disagree with some of his moves, i wouldn't sign the petition... an election was an election, and he didn't break the law... there is a reason why we have elections every 4 years... but a recall? i don't know about that...

i think it's absurd. we lost two conventions (one, really as the other group hadn't even made plans with the city convention organization...it was all blowing smoke!)...La Raza? who fucking cares. Semler, the main focal point of the whole issue, is against illegal immigration just like a lot of people. Doesn't make her a racist or a xenophobe and it sure as shit doesn't mean Funk's at fault for keeping her on as a member of the PARKS BOARD. seriously.
as for the Wayne Cauthen thing, i'll agree that was a bit wack, but nobody complained when this guy was the city auditor for 16 years and kept the city's ass in financial check. now he stands up for one of his board choices and makes a couple of mistakes and people wanna crucify him. i don't get it. it's only been 9 months. it's not like he's been in office for 7 years and completely fucked our economy.

The only thing that would make me think about signing this petition is the whole light rail thing. He recalled something that we voted for. Was the whole thing a clusterfuck? Probably. But, we voted for it and it was a start to something that this city desperately needs.
As Andrew said, "an election was an election".

^^^that i would agree with. the lightrail thing was definitely a serious mistake on his part.

Fuck Funkhouser! He's a moron. He taught at Park U of all schools. That's like teaching at Penn Valley in area Universities. I didn't vote for him, I do not stand by him, and he's only going to further ruin KC. We already have no chance at a proper mass transit system because of him yet he still wants downtown growth? Growth + no public transit = disaster + waste of time & money = no tourism coming to the area. An election is an election however since he took it in his own hands to recall the light rail I say we should return the favor. Democracy is a wonderful thing, take advantage of it while we still have it.

Ummm, I am a Park University student. There is nothing wrong with that school. It is a highly-rated University and has been around since the late 1800's. Its nothing like a community college, I went to Penn Valley so that I know.

I think you missed my point. In all of the Universities in the area... KU, MU, UMKC, K-State, William Jewel... Park is probably the least accredited nationally out of them all. I wasn't personally attacking you or anyone that goes to Park and I understand it's not the same as Penn Valley, it was an extreme exaggeration used to bring humor.

i think one of the main problems kc has is not giving people a chance once we elect/hire them.

so then you're just making assumptions about the quality of the school?
most people think JCCC is a blow off junior college, but i have to say i had to work my ass off there. you can't judge a teacher/person by the campus they teach at. it's entirely possible that Park gave him the better hiring package than the others OR it was the only one hiring at the time.

Not at all. Park U is regionally accredited while KU, MU, UMKC, K-State, SWMS, etc are nationally accredited schools.
From the Park U website, "Park University’s degree programs are regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission."

I agree here. I don't know specifically what he's done wrong, but seriously... giving jobs to people close to you is a fucking American tradition. To the victors go the spoils and all that. If he breaks the law, I'd tell my family to sign. Call me when he has.

He recalled a vote that the voters of KC passed. I know that isnt illegal but it is very, very wrong.
