U.S. military report warns 'sudden collapse' of Mexico is possible

EL PASO - Mexico is one of two countries that "bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse," according to a report by the U.S. Joint Forces Command on worldwide security threats.

The command's "Joint Operating Environment (JOE 2008)" report, which contains projections of global threats and potential next wars, puts Pakistan on the same level as Mexico. "In terms of worse-case scenarios for the Joint Force and indeed the world, two large and important states bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse: Pakistan and Mexico.

"The Mexican possibility may seem less likely, but the government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault and press by criminal gangs and drug cartels. How that internal conflict turns out over the next several years will have a major impact on the stability of the Mexican state. Any descent by Mexico into chaos would demand an American response based on the serious implications for homeland security alone."

The U.S. Joint Forces Command, based in Norfolk, Va., is one of the Defense Departments combat commands that includes members of the different military service branches, active and reserves, as well as civilian and contract employees. One of its key roles is to help transform the U.S. military's capabilities.

In the foreword, Marine Gen. J.N. Mattis, the USJFC commander, said "Predictions about the future are always risky ... Regardless, if we do not try to forecast the future, there is no doubt that we will be caught off guard as we strive to protect this experiment in democracy that we call America."

The report is one in a series focusing on Mexico's internal security problems, mostly stemming from drug violence and drug corruption. In recent weeks, the Department of Homeland Security and former U.S. drug czar Barry McCaffrey issued similar alerts about Mexico.

Despite such reports, El Pasoan Veronica Callaghan, a border business leader, said she keeps running into people in the region who "are in denial about what is happening in Mexico."

Last week, Mexican President Felipe Calderon instructed his embassy and consular officials to promote a positive image of Mexico.

The U.S. military report, which also analyzed economic situations in other countries, also noted that China has increased its influence in places where oil fields are present.

not knocking the story but I grew up going to ElPaso/Juarez once a month to go get v-cuts and bars. Anyone who's been to a city that's not a tourist trap in mexico can vouch that its always had that lawless feel.

Like some cigar smoking renegade general could roll through town at any moment and take over the country.

There are only small pockets of truly civil, law biding, structured, civilization and even then they're fairly crazy compared to our standards.

I think the potential has always been there but the global financial climate has made it a bit more realistic.

I work with a lot of real mexicans, some are here legally, some are not.

And they've def. got some crazy stories to tell.... The ones that can speak English.

I'm not sure if the world is falling apart here, or we're just becoming more and more aware of the flaws in general.

Some of the stories that freaked me out the most was that these grown men would literally pick up 11-13 year old girls. And they can have sex with them whether the girl wants it or not..... It's disgusting to me. And they have no penalties for doing this...

Juarez= madness. used to go down there and score back in the day. it realy is a lawless town. cops that r there are corrupt and into slinging as much as the cartels.

Yeah it really is. Sad thing is Juarez is relatively tame compared to some places. Most small 'cities' have mayors who are simply mayors because they are the tough guy of the area. It's really crazy to hear some stories about small cities (3-5000 people) that are governed with absolutely 0 relation to the national government. They pay nothing to them and receive no national benefits. They're just self sufficient independently governed areas with no enforcement of national laws or really civil rights.

Oh yes... Your dipping into a completely different debatable subject now.

The asians are smarter then the mexicans and make a better product? Ha I dunno... But I completely understand where your coming from. And can't say my uneducated mind disagrees to a point.

Hell, we shoulda just bought mexico and made em make our shit for free. That would teach em to put the country right next to ours.

also mexico has sufferend from our economy collapse because something like $20billion or million of money going to mexico is sent from immigrants to home. Now they're losing their jobs here too

Good. I hope the fucking illegals go back home.

Like I said, I work with illegals, and legals. And the illegals piss me off..... They're taking jobs that American citizens need, especially right now.

I have 0 issues with the ones that do it legally. They met the requirements, so it's fair.

Yeah, compared to the shit going on in Nuevo Laredo Juarez seems tame. TJ is still a toilet though, but whats new there. Thats the land of underage strippers and donkey shows.

From what I've read in some news stories quite a few illegals are going back home because they can't find work, and thats just fine with me.

??????

TJ is not crazy or anything... its a tourist trap. Like Mexico light.

Nuevo Laredo is actually a pretty strictly enforced area. Tamaulipas actually cooperates with the US government a lot. Laredo (texas) has a positive influence on Nuevo Laredo. Still a lot of dope coming accross but nothing grimey like Juarez.

Juarez is much larger and has a negative effect on El Paso. Chihuahua has next to no cooperation with the US government at all. Murder rate is insane. If you go 2 or 3 miles in from El Paso shit starts getting crazy.

Not sure where you got your info :/

Looks to me like our anti-drug enforcement policy is working out great for making the world a better, safer place.
