MEXICO CITY -- Mexico closed schools across this metropolis of 20 million Friday after at least 16 people died and more than 900 others fell ill from what health officials suspect is a strain of swine flu new to Mexico.

Update from the Desk of Dr. Phoenix*
Good news:
Present belief is that the high mortality rate in Mexico (7%) is related not to the virus itself, but to their healthcare/infrastructure/government response. So far Mexico is the only country cited A1 (H1N1) related deaths. Officially there are 40 deaths, but I am beginning to suspect the number in Mexico is between 200 & 500 deaths at present, based on independent reports outside of government-related reports.
Another potential for the mortality rate is an unknown secondary infection, either bacterial or viral that is causing this strain of influenza to be lethal.
We'll know by Friday whether the flu is lethal on its own, or merely icky.
Bad news:
This is a completely new virus. As such, no one has immunity to it. A vaccine will take 6-9 months through regular channels.
The virus is already human to human transmissible. The concern with bird flu was that it would make the jump from birds to humans regularly enough to become a human to human transmission...which it didn't. Yet.
The next piece of bad news is that because of the cases already determined to exist worldwide, the likelihood now is that it will spread throughout the population of the US, Canada, and S. American states, if not worldwide over the course of the year.
This virus appears to be resistant to the two most often used antivirals, amantadine and rimantadine, but it is susceptible to oseltamivir, marketed as Tamiflu and zanamivir, marketed as Relenza. The US has strong stocks of Tamiflu, purchased in preparation for a pandemic. Its shelf life effectiveness is also stronger than originally thought.
The duration involved is problematic. Earliest cases are being traced to March, which means that this bug was out of the jar far before the alarm was raised. Therefore, it cannot be contained at this point. More people in the US and worldwide are going to get this virus within the next weeks and months.
The other factor in combination that is worrisome is that apparently you can be infectious without symptoms for one day, and infectious with symptoms for 7 days, possibly longer.
And lastly, the age range of those who are dying in Mexico are healthy, young people--20-30 year olds, similar to the 1918 influenza pandemic which killed 20 to 100 million people over 2 years.
On the positive side, SARS and bird flu have prepared some governments to deal with a serious pandemic more effectively than they would have without any previous alarms being raised. Also, thus far the confirmed cases outside of Mexico have not been lethal, which means that significant deaths may not occur as feared. More will be apparent by the end of the week.
There is a surprisingly well maintained wikipedia article on this subject at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_swine_flu_outbreak
There is more information directly from the CDC at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/key_facts.htm and at other locations within cdc.gov

So if you catch this, does it mean that you are definitely going to die... or are people making it out alive? On my way home to stl last night, NPR seemed to go out between booneville and warrenton so I switched to the only other talk radio- Michael Savage aka: super republican radio (dont get scared). The freakiest part about the show was Savage's accusing of Obama trying to hide the fact that this virus could possibly be bioterrorism and that if he closed the borders to mexico less illegal immigrants would come into the states, thus not allowing his 'power' to grow. Seriously, where does this dude come up with this shit??

One official from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) likened the flu to a [zombie] "virus", something that will spread insidiously and relentlessly, until you'll try and seek help in a hospital, but the hospital will be dark and scary, because everyone inside will be dead from swine flu.
"For example," said Jeffrey Spalding, a man who was standing outside the CDC, "a child contracts swine flu, and passes it on to another child by attacking and biting the other child. Soon, that child begins to vomit blood from the eyes, and the eye-blood vomit can also pass on the virus. Suddenly, all of England is dead. That's pretty much the science of it."

The mortality rate in Mexico is 7%, meaning that 93% of the people who have gotten it have survived.
7% is still a pretty high number, but again the current thought from the CDC and the WHO is that the mortality rate in Mexico is due to either their healthcare system/infrastructure or another infection causing complications leading to death.
Everyone found to be infected in so called 1st world countries have recovered so far. Thankfully, we're not dealing with Ebola (mortality rate: 98%).
Savage is completely full of shit.
The WHO and the CDC determined it was not related to bioterrorism around Saturday. The most likely cause is factory farming of pigs, providing a fertile environment for viruses to breed and evolve. Pigs are already known to be a host that can allow viruses to combine in new ways.
As for closing the borders, its too late. Its already here. Besides, I don't think closing the borders will stop the flow of illegal aliens, since they tend not to cross the borders at sanctioned locations.
I'm curious what disease the right-wingers have been infected with that has turned them into foaming mouth lunatics...but its probably too late for them to be quarantined.

And now the idiot governator has declared a "state of emergency" in CA. Alarming people is really going to help the situation. Dumbass.
