View Full Version : paul oakenfold: sell out or not....what do you think

Does anyone think that paul oakenfold sold out, i do and not because of him doing huge scores for blockbuster hits, i think every since "another world" i think his popularity has just gone to his head and i think its affecting his music i.e ibiza
now dont get me wrong here its a great cd with awsome tracks but its nothing compared to his earlier music like transport, or live from oslo. I also noticed that the last time he was in KC, the crowd didnt show as much love as they did the previous year, i mean last year the crowd just went balistic when oakie took the stage, if it got any louder the roof would have started to buckle. But i think if you're a big time producer/ remixer/ dj you should do it for the love of music and not for the money. anywho thats just what i think:P:P:P:P

He's been a sellout for years...seriously, he's not even that great of a dj when it comes to live performances...wrecks, shitty mixing and programming, problems across the board.
But when you're a huge name and have all the newest, fad-driven drivel that's supposed to be the next big hit, what can you expect??
When he was headlining Global Dance Festival this year in Denver, the majority of the crowd went up to the top of the ampitheatre and listened to a killer local breaks live p.a. by the name of Friends In Stereo.
That's what I call a GOOD MOVE.

people were saying he sold out long before tranceport came out. he used to play more goa-type trance and then his style became more epic. that's what happened to everyone, though. he was really big then also, so i think maybe people blamed him for carrying on the change of styles for better or worse. i don't have an opinion myself... don't really care.

He is a dick head and a sell out. Sure he's had some big hits and that has done quite a bit for the electronic music world, but others have done the same and have not sold out. The only records or cds he plays are pre-programed at a certain bpm. Trainwrecking, records running out, ect. He doesn't care about music anymore on;y about $$$$$$. Trance is novelty. It's the style of electronic music that your random club goer or party goer thinks if it's on the radio, commercials, or even movies it has to be good. He's like a Backstreet boy of electronic music. The underground is the heart and soul of this type of music or really any other type. The underground community is responsible for for the pop shit that gets out of hand. Take disco for instance. Probably most of you on here right now has probably never heard REAL disco. Just the pop shit that you've heard on the radio or other places. That happens to thing when they start to get popular. So it's up to the the pioneers to "keep it real". Everyone will follow suite. Just do it right. You can be popular and be on the radio and have music videos and still do it right. I guess that is what separates your run-of-the-mill musicians from the great ones.

^^^Well said.
I think he is a sellout and has been for sometime. I really dont think their is much of an argument against him being a sellout. I have not once gone to see him anywhere spin because I have heard recorded sets and they were complete shit.

Oakenfold is the last person I thought I would see in a thread on this board, btw.
His Essential Mix cd w/ Fatboy Slim pretty much got me into Trance years ago....loved it.
Still listen to it once in a while. Can you say Solar Stone - "Seven Cities"?
<<<<shut up mike>>>>>
All I know is that when he started producing, his true lack of talent was magnified. Bunkka was pollution to my ears.
I actually purchased it, then threw it out the window of my car on I-35 like 2 days later.
If any of you have seen any of his sets recently, he has OBVIOUSLY made the move to progressive house.
Stick a fork in him.
